Use the checkerboard only as a transparency indicator; test the actual edge over both light and dark colors.

A transparent background is an alpha channel, not a white color. The reliable workflow separates the subject with a selection or mask, checks the edge against contrasting backgrounds, and exports a format that supports transparency.

STEP BY STEP

Recommended workflow

  1. 01

    Select the subject

Start with Object Select, Magic Wand, or a selection brush depending on contrast and edge complexity. A fast first selection does not need to be perfect.

  2. 02

    Convert to a mask

Hide the background with a layer mask instead of permanently deleting pixels. This keeps difficult regions recoverable during refinement.

  3. 03

    Refine the edge

Zoom in around hair, fabric, reflective objects, and contact shadows. Paint gently on the mask and avoid a hard cutout halo.

  4. 04

    Verify and export

Place temporary light and dark layers behind the subject, then export PNG or WebP with transparency enabled. Reopen the file to confirm the alpha channel.

Selection versus mask

A selection defines where the next operation applies. A mask stores visibility with the layer, making the separation editable after the selection itself is gone. This is safer for product cutouts and portraits.

Deleting pixels can be acceptable for a disposable copy, but it removes recovery options. Keep a masked master even when the final delivery is a flat transparent image.

Avoiding white and dark halos

Halos often come from background color remaining in partially transparent edge pixels. Inspect the subject over opposite background colors to reveal contamination that a checkerboard can hide.

Keep natural soft transitions where they belong. Over-contracting a mask removes fine hair and contact shadows, making the subject look pasted onto the new scene.

Common mistakes

  • Replacing the background with white and calling it transparent.
  • Exporting JPG, which cannot store an alpha channel.
  • Checking the edge only against the checkerboard.
FAQ

Questions and answers

Which format keeps a transparent background?

PNG is the most predictable choice. WebP also supports transparency and can be smaller for website delivery.

Why does my transparent image have a white background?

The viewer may display transparency as white, or the file may have been exported as JPG. Reopen it over a colored layer and verify the format.

Should I delete the background or use a mask?

Use a mask for important work because it preserves pixels and allows later edge corrections. Delete only in a disposable copy.
