A convincing cutout depends less on one automatic click than on the edge review that follows. Start with the clearest subject selection, convert it to a reversible mask, inspect hair and soft transitions, and judge the result against the background where it will actually be used.

    Open the highest-resolution version available. Strong separation in color, brightness, or focus between the subject and background makes the initial boundary more reliable.

    Click the subject with Object Select. Add missed areas with Selection Brush and subtract holes or background regions before creating the mask.

    Refine the layer mask

    Zoom to 100%, paint on the mask with a soft controlled brush, and alternate between light and dark temporary backgrounds to reveal bright or dark fringes.

    Test and export

    Place the cutout in its intended composition, check contact shadows and edge color, then export PNG at the final pixel dimensions while keeping the layered master.

Why masks produce safer cutouts

A mask hides pixels without destroying them. If part of a sleeve, product handle, or strand of hair disappears, you can paint it back instead of reopening the source and repeating the entire selection.

The mask also remains useful when a later layout needs a different edge treatment. A soft editorial composite, a sharp catalogue cutout, and a small thumbnail may each need slightly different refinement.

Handling hair, glass, and soft shadows

Fine hair should not become a hard helmet shape. Use a smaller soft brush, preserve major strands, and evaluate them at the final display size; isolated single pixels rarely survive downscaling.

Transparent glass and natural shadows contain background information, so a binary cutout may look artificial. Preserve partial opacity where it communicates material or contact, then verify it on the actual destination color.
